make sure the paddles are turned clockwise (to the right) all the way, then trun off the deevice and turn it back on. thee turn both paddles to the middle.

Also make sure mister mode is off and driving is off in the other menu on the device.

Screen should show an A and a 1 on the bottom right corner, 

Alsso check the pins to make sure they are not bent.

Auto mode fails to detect the paddles and on mode does not register any changes when the controller knobs are twisted but the buttons are working correctly. I have ensured that the paddle controllers are still functional with a multimeter at the DB9 connector. Is there anything I should do to further debug this or preferably get paddles working correctly.
